Dr. Carl David Rowland, DBA MBA BSN RN CEN.
I am originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and have 25 years of experience in nursing ranging from front-line emergency room (ER) nursing to critical care operations to management.
I have been a nurse educator, assistant nurse manager, manager, nursing supervisor, director, assistant chief nurse executive, IT clinical consultant, business operations consultant, MBA, MHA, and Organizational Development Professor, taught ACLS, PALS, BLS, NRP, Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB), and many other healthcare and business courses.
I began my working life, gaining a love for teaching and process improvement after being a Navy League Cadet, then a Sea Cadet, and a Canadian Army Officer for 10 years, followed by starting and running a home healthcare agency in Montreal (specializing in taking care of terminally ill patients).
After my nursing diploma (like an associate's degree) at Vanier College, I moved to the United States under the TN/I-94 Agreement (Free-Trade). I did a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky while working full-time at a local hospital in the ER. Early in my healthcare career, I remember distinctly leaders in both Canadian and American hospitals stating: "You can't have good patient care and a good bottom line." It seemed to me that many of the biggest issues in healthcare seem to come from a lack of understanding of how to marry the two aspects of healthcare. Sound finance and safe operations with the different viewpoints of the businesspeople and the practicing clinicians. There exists a large knowledge gap in how to achieve the triple bottom line of "on-time", "on-budget", while maintaining a high-performance culture and keeping your employees engaged in meeting those goals.
To change this, I realized I needed to learn all I could about business, and (although I loved nursing), I chose to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Golden Gate University to accomplish this goal. I moved to San Francisco where a hospital offered me a "Green Card", then, after the MBA, I re-opened my company to focus on consulting and found that many businesses other than healthcare were requesting my services for training and cultural development. I went on to complete a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) as I wanted to maximize my knowledge and how to apply it to healthcare. I am currently pursuing a second Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
Dr. Carl currently splits his time between teaching and consulting in New England and California primarily.
